Compiled from the DnD Victorian SCP Campaign and Habsburgs 1705 Cadet Branch sessions during a deep GPT-log research pass (2026-08-13). This character reuses the real historical Franz Joseph I of Austria's (1830–1916) actual biography and family tree wholesale, transplanted into an alternate outcome rather than invented from scratch — every genealogical fact below is real, only the political situation around him is altered. Several details are explicitly still open or only lightly sketched — see Open Threads. One section (Vienna's neutrality) is the author's own new resolution (2026-08-13), not from the 2023 sessions, and is marked as such.
Franz Joseph — the Demiduke of Vienna
Current Canon Snapshot
Elevator hook: A man born into a punishment he didn't commit, ruling nine miles of the empire his line was never allowed to keep.
Franz Joseph reuses the identity of the real Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria — but in Thaer, he never became Emperor of anything. He is the current inheritor of a title created generations before his birth: Demiduke of Vienna, later also styled "the Magnanimous Archduke of Steel."

The origin of the title (1705)
The punishment he carries didn't start with him. In 1705, the real Habsburg Archduke and Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I (1678–1711, eldest son of Leopold I) refused to submit Habsburg Austria to a unified Catholic Union alongside the Italian states, Portugal, France, and Spain — refusing to submit to Papal authority. The Pope excommunicated him for it, and stripped his line of the Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary, awarding the bulk of the real Habsburg territories to a cousin/cadet branch instead. Critically, the Pope made the excommunication a hereditary condition of a newly-created diminished title — meaning every one of Joseph I's descendants inherits both the title and the excommunication automatically, generation after generation. Franz Joseph, born 1830, is simply the current holder of that inheritance by the time the DnD Victorian SCP campaign takes place.

The exile terms
His actual domain is a hard exclusion zone: a circle roughly 9 miles in radius, centered on the Hofburg Palace in Vienna — smaller than Liechtenstein. He cannot leave it; as an excommunicate, he is unwelcome in the Catholic lands that surround him on every side. Two German names were floated for the zone itself, and the narrative prose that actually got written favors the first: "Sühnestadt" ("atonement-city," from Sühne + Stadt) over the alternate "Strafkreis" ("punishment-district").

Birth and family tragedy
The session built real gothic material around his birth, layered on top of his real genealogy:
- Born in the Hofburg Palace — described in the actual narrative prose as "a grand temple of sorts to the bygone glory of the Austrian Empire," possibly also "a shrine to an old, forgotten god" that had turned its gaze from the city, leaving it in a kind of suspended animation. Strange phenomena reportedly occurred across the region at the moment of his birth.
- His mother — the real Princess Sophie of Bavaria (House of Wittelsbach) — died in childbirth, but not before prophesying that her son was destined to lift the city's curse and reclaim Austria's lost glory.
- His great-uncle, Prince Adalbert of Bavaria (identified via Sophie's real Wittelsbach family tree — her mother Ludovika's brothers included the real King Maximilian II of Bavaria), blamed the newborn Franz Josef for Sophie's death, spiraled into depression, and took his own life.
- His father is referenced as already dead by the time of the main narrative — "the ghost of Franz Josef's father, haunting the halls of the Hofburg Palace" — though how or when he died was not found in the recovered material. Genuine gap, not just an unwritten detail.
- Because of this, Franz Josef inherited his parents' full estate — money, lands, possessions — prematurely. His dying mother's wish attached a real condition to that inheritance: he must devote his life to championing the poor, weak, and downtrodden.

As an adult
Grown entirely inside this exile, knowing only the Demiduke title and its constraints, his ambitions run in two directions at once: maintaining what influence he still has within his tiny domain, and covertly working to reclaim his family's lost titles and lands — a lifelong, largely secret restoration project rather than open rebellion.

Physical description (as of 1867)
Built loosely off the real historical Franz Joseph's portraits, aged to 1867 using his real 1830 birth year (age 36–37): pale/medium blue eyes, oval-shaped, alert; thick dark brown hair, side-parted, with a prominent mustache; average height (~5'8"–5'9"); Austrian (Germanic) ethnicity, fair skin.

Family (real Habsburg-Lorraine genealogy, reused as-is)
- Father: Archduke Franz Karl of Austria (House of Habsburg-Lorraine)
- Mother: Princess Sophie of Bavaria (House of Wittelsbach), died in his childbirth — see above
- Wife: Elisabeth of Bavaria ("Sisi"), also House of Wittelsbach
- Brothers: Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph (the real Maximilian I of Mexico, executed 1867 in real history — worth checking whether that fate still applies here, since he wouldn't have been "given" Mexico to rule under this altered Habsburg situation); Karl Ludwig Joseph Maria (real father of the Franz Ferdinand whose 1914 assassination started WWI in the real timeline); Ludwig Viktor

Vienna's neutrality (author resolution, 2026-08-13 — not from the 2023 sessions)
None of the above explains how Franz Joseph's residency squares with Vienna's own separately-documented status as neutral ground claimed by none of the four Post-Yawning empires. The resolution: it doesn't need to. He isn't a rival claimant — his title is a punishment with no territory attached to it anymore, and he simply lives on ground that happens to be neutral. Vienna's own neutrality has a separate origin: rather than repeat Constantinople's real 1453 mistake (ignoring engineer Orban's siege-cannon offer, who then sold the design to the Ottomans, whose bombardment broke the city's walls), Vienna bought the equivalent weapon itself — a purchased deterrent that kept all four theocracies at arm's length long enough for neutrality to become accepted fact.
Open Threads / Unresolved
- Which title is primary is unclear. "Demiduke of Vienna" appears first, in the session's earlier (2023-07-23) messages; "the Magnanimous Archduke of Steel" appears exclusively in later messages (dated roughly a week on, 2023-08-01) with no explicit statement that one replaced the other. Treated here as the later title having superseded the earlier one, but that's an inference, not a confirmed fact.
- His father's death is referenced, not detailed. The "ghost... haunting the halls" line implies Franz Karl died before the main narrative, but no cause or date was recovered.
- Whether Maximilian's real Mexican fate still holds in this timeline is unaddressed — his real-world installation as Emperor of Mexico depended on a French-backed intervention that may not play out the same way given how differently Austria's own situation has been rewritten.
- No confirmed connection yet to the Thaer Empire Map's own AUSTRIAN_CIRCLE_1792/AUSTRIA_1700 entries (the real circa-1705/1792 Habsburg territories, now Catholic Union ground) — this doc and those map entries describe the same underlying history but were built independently; worth cross-checking for consistency later.
